 Place Value Penguins - a fun penguin-themed activity pack for TENS and ONES.

This is a really versatile resource that includes three different activities to try (two math centers and one math craft).

These activities will help your child/students work on the topic of place value and explore how 2-digit numbers can be broken down into tens and ones. All with the help of penguins!

This resource is designed for grade 1 children or any children working on 2-digit numbers.

There are three different activities in this download:

1. Penguin Match

For this first activity, your child/students will match eight penguins to their hats. On each penguin's tummy there is a number shown in base ten blocks. Match the penguin to the hat with the corresponding numeral. There are eight penguins and eight hats to match.

 2. Build-a-Number

This is a fun hands-on activity where children will build numbers with base ten blocks. First, take a penguin picture. Next, choose one of the coloured hats (each of which shows a 2-digit numbers) and put it on your penguin. Use base ten blocks to build the number shown on the hat.

3. Penguin Math Craft

This last activity is a math craft where children get to make their own place value penguin. Children will colour and cut out the different parts of the penguin. They will then choose a 2-digit numbers and show this as a numeral (on the penguin's hat), as tens and ones (on the penguin's feet) and as base ten blocks (on the penguin's tummy).  Colour and cut out the finished penguins to make a fun display for your wall or classroom math bulletin board.
